On The Line or Take Your Time

The Importance of Psychology in Coaching

Biography

Hello, my name is Lucky Giyanani. I have been at Wakefield School for eight years; next fall, I will be attending the University of Maryland at College Park studying business management. Growing up, sports were my life; in fact, I practically lived on the ESPN box score tab. As I got older, I began to consider the coaches in my life, as well as professional coaches and what makes them similar and different. Additionally, I have always been interested in sports psychology, mentorship, and what lessons athletes take the most from. I wanted to explore these concepts further, and when Mr. Pennisi proposed the idea to be a Middle School assistant basketball coach, I knew I wanted to write my thesis on it. I made a documentary that includes professional research, coach interviews, and a recap of my own coaching experience, as well, with regard to the importance of coaching psychology.

Abstract

“On the Line or Take Your Time?” is a documentary thesis that explores the fundamental role of psychology in coaching, focusing on its impact on athlete performance, development, and well-being. “On the Line” is a hyperbole that criticizes coaches who only look to punishment to enhance player development, whereas “Take Your Time” points to coaches who are patient and build meaningful relationships with their athletes. As coaching has changed over time, the psychology of coaching has leapfrogged the X’s and O’s in coaching in terms of importance and prioritization. Through a combination of professional research, interviews with experienced coaches, and creator’s personal experience as a middle school basketball coach, the documentary delves into the intricate relationship between psychology and coaching.
